Blue Belle: Sweet Sixteen All-Star

Blue Belle

2013 Statistics
Born: ~2011
Weight: Medium
Breed: Domestic Medium Hair
Adoption Fee: $20 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats:  My name is Blue Belle, I am a loving 1 year old girl who so desperately seeks a home. I was found at a dumpster by a volunteer. I begged her to take me home and she did. During my checkup I was diagnosed with Feline Leukemia. I am currently healthy otherwise and showing no symptoms of my disease. I am desperate to find a loving home where I can live out my life and with a family that understands my disease.

Career Prospects: I must be in a home as an only cat, or with other Feline Leukemia positive cats. I am such a love bug that I would like a lap of my own and not have to share it!

Watch Blue Belle's special dance in this episode of BHS Desperate Housecats (Blue Belle's segment starts around 5:15):

McCausland Trust Grant Award

Bedford Humane Society would like to thank the McCausland Trust for a grant award that will help support the following programs in the Bedford area:

Foster Care & Adoption Programs
The heart and soul of our organization, fostering and adoption allows us to provide homes to companion animals that may not make it out of the pound.

Emergency Funding Programs
Because we know that emergency vet care can place a strain on struggling families, our Emergency Fund allows us to help families seek emergency care for their pets when they may not otherwise be able to afford it.

Forgotten Felines Program
Stray and feral cat populations continue to be an area of concern in Bedford County. Our Forgotten Felines Program allows us to offer extremely low-cost spaying/neutering and rabies vaccination to reduce the number of cats and kittens ending up in the pound.

Subsidized Spay/Neuter Services
One of our biggest missions is preventing more who will need us by spaying and neutering. Our subsidized program allows families to access spaying/neutering for their pets at low-cost.

Pet Food Distribution Program
Our Pet Food Distribution Program helps struggling families feed their pets. Our goal is to keep pets out of the pound and in their loving homes.

Humane Education Program
Humane education is key to raising awareness of what we do and reduce the number of animals that end up in the pound every year. At the core of this program is spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership to reduce the number of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.

Max: Elite Eight All-Star

Max
2013 Statistics
Born: 2008
Weight: ~30 pounds
Breed: Shar-Pei mix
Adoption Fee: $50 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats: Max came to us along with Susie and Tila after their person was hospitalized and there was no one left to care for them. We found him living in a small crate, very underweight and starved for attention. When we brought him out of his crate, he was clearly thankful and happy to be outside. Since his time in foster with a change in food, Max has moved back to a healthy weight and looks forward to a happy life in a forever home of his own.

Max gets a greeting from Tila, his former housemate.

Career Prospects: Max is a sweet, gentle boy who gets along well with other dogs. He would love a family of his own to enjoy the rest of his life with.

You can see adorable Max asking for attention during the Winter Wonderland Adoption Event in the video below. He makes his appearance around the 2:00 minute mark.

Freckle Face: Sweet Sixteen All-Star

Freckle Face

2013 Statistics
Born: ~2010
Weight: Medium
Breed: Domestic
Adoption Fee: $20 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats: Freckle Face is very affectionate and thoroughly enjoys being petted. She is friendly with other cats and seems to miss the other cats in the colony room when they get adopted. We call her Freckles, but since there is a second Freckles at HQ right now, we have reverted to her full name of Freckle Face. She really seems to be a great mix of quiet, but social.

Career Prospects: Freckle Face would likely do well in just about any environment. She hasn't lived with a dog in about two years, but she would probably be fine with any new animal if given the appropriate time and space to adjust.

See Freckle Face in action in this episode of BHS Desperate Housecats:

Anastasha: Sweet Sixteen All-Star

Anastasha

2013 Statistics
Born: 2004
Weight: I'm a big girl
Breed: Domestic
Adoption Fee: $20 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats: Anastasha came to us when her people could no longer keep her. This funny girl is front declawed and very chatty. She makes a funny "growly" sound when she is happy. She recently moved from her foster home to our HQ for our March Adoption Madness event so people could stop by and meet her. She is adjusting to the new environment, but would prefer a loving forever home.

Career Prospects: Anastasha ("Stasha" for short) does fine with cat-friendly dogs, but prefers not to live with other cats.

Queenie: Elite Eight All-Star

FOSTER NEEDED!
Queenie

2013 Statistics
Born: 2011
Weight: ~80 pounds
Breed: Boxer/Mastiff mix
Adoption Fee: $50 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats: Hi, my name is Queenie because I like being the Queen. A few months ago my dad got ill and could no longer take care of me so I had to go to the Bedford County Animal Shelter until the nice people from Bedford Humane Society took me into foster care. I am very athletic and love to play, but I'm a big girl so I need a little more training to learn not to jump. I haven’t had any potty accidents here and they are trying to teach me some manners. I still like to jump up a lot because I’m so excited! A big girl like me could knock someone over very easily. I walk well on a leash unless I see a squirrel or a cat, so I'm learning how to control that, too. I like to play fetch inside or out. I want to be a lap dog, but I haven’t found a lap big enough yet.

Queenie is currently in boarding because our foster space for her didn't work out. We'd love to find her a foster home while she waits for adoption. Or if you're interested in trying a foster-to-adopt option, let us know!

Career Prospects: I am usually ok with other animals, but I do love to play and I'm a big girl. I am looking for someone to play ball with or go hiking and who has a soft spot for me to sleep at night. I am currently getting some training and everyone says I'm super smart. So, I'd really love someone that will be clear with what they want from me because all I really want is a person of my own to make happy.

Watch this great video of me playing soccer! I've got some great skills!

Jasper: Elite Eight All-Star

Jasper

2013 Statistics
Born: 2002
Weight: ~17 pounds
Breed: Pekingese/Shih Tzu mix
Adoption Fee: $50 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats: Jasper was rescued from the Bedford County Animal Shelter where he was facing spending his last days in the pound. He is such a sweet, loving little man that wants to be with his people. He is very devoted. He is housebroken, but will also use potty pads, if necessary.

Career Prospects: Jasper wants a home where he can spend his retirement years with people he can love and trust. He loves children, gets along with other dogs, and ignores cats. He is a special needs senior who will need an observant owner able to potentially contend with repeated urine testing, special foods, and maybe even surgery. He will need a diet to help prevent calcium oxalate stone recurrence and the advice on what to do is varied. Whatever his needs, he is certainly worthy of all the love he can get.

You can see some highlights of Jasper in this video from our Adoption Wonderland Event last December (at time markers 2:12 & 2:55):

AppleJack: Sweet Sixteen All-Star

AppleJack

2013 Statistics
Born: 2010
Weight: "medium:
Breed: Norwegian Forest Cat
Adoption Fee: $20 during March Adoption Madness

Career Stats: Sweet AppleJack is looking for a family of his own. It has taken nearly six months of love and patience, but Jack finally seems comfortable in his new foster home and will seek his foster mom out when it's time to cuddle or play. His favorite game is playing fetch with his mousey toy and he expects this playtime every night. He will trill loudly when it's time to go downstairs and play before bedtime. As with most cats, Jack is cautious with new animals and people. He gets along well with the younger male cats in the household and largely ignores the large dog. He continues to try to get the two older female cats to play, though that usually ends up in an argument. They want nothing to do with him.

Career Prospects: Jack would make an excellent companion for someone willing to give him the time and space he needs to adjust to new settings. He would probably do fine in a home with other pets, though he may adjust more quickly in a home where he is the only pet or with only one other pet. Whatever the environment, Jack simply needs love and patience (and a little mousey toy play time).

Watch this short video of Jack created a few months ago. Note, the longer he is with his foster family,  the less he wants to be on his own. He just wants love and safety like everyone else.
