BHS Adoptables of the Week: Freckles and Taffy

Freckles is one of the stars of the new YouTube hit BHS Desperate Housecats. She is very sweet and gets along well with other cats. She enjoys pets and cuddles and would love to find a forever home of her own. Email info@bhsav.org for an adoption application if you are interested in meeting this beautiful girl.

Taffy is a 12 year old female MinPin/Chihuahua mix who gets along well with other animals, is housebroken, and still quite spry for her age. She is looking for a home where she can live out her senior years in comfort. Email info@bhsva.org for an adoption application if you are interested in meeting this exceptional girl.

He Doesn't Know It Yet, But He Has Hope

Three-year old Diesel sits at the pound waiting to be rescued after being left there by his family. The more days that pass, the less hope Diesel has of making it out alive. He knows the realities of being dumped at the pound. He knows that his chances of survival decrease significantly with each day that passes. And he knows that as a black dog, he is even less likely to be adopted from the pound.

You can see it in his eyes, he has almost given up hope.

But here's the good knews. Diesel doesn't know it yet, but he has hope. Thanks to some amazing animal rescue volunteers who have spent hours networking him, Diesel has a rescue willing to take him in and give him a second chance. We need your help to make this happen.

The rescue willing to help Diesel is full. They cannot take Diesel for another month. Bedford Humane Society is full. We do not have a foster space for him to wait for transfer to another rescue. Are you willing to foster Diesel until this happens? Do you want to help save a life by opening up your home to a temporary houseguest? I suspect he would be well-behaved, willing to protect your home while you are at work, and probably not opposed to cuddles when you're having a bad day.

Ask anyone who fosters, whether animals or children, and they will tell you: the benefits far outweigh the emotional costs. If you commit to saving his life, you will cry when he leaves you to begin his new life. But you will be left with the comfort that, because of YOU, Diesel will have his own happy forever after. And isn't that easier than knowing he died alone and unwanted in the pound?

Diesel also needs to be vetted before going to rescue and the rescue committing to him is still recovering from the costs of treating puppies for Parvo. Can you help sponsor Diesel's vetting costs by donating to our Extra Mile Fund? Donate through our ChipIn at Extra Mile Fund ChipIn. Donations can also be mailed or taken to Bedford Humane Society at 829 Ole Turnpike Drive, Bedford, VA 24523.

BHS Adoptables of the Week: Prissy & Charlie

Prissy is a very 4 year old female Chihuahua that we pulled from the pound several months ago after she was found as a stray. She was adopted into a loving home, but it soon became apparent that Prissy needs to be an only dog. She does not do well with other animals, but she loves people. She wins over hearts quickly and easily with her beautiful face and sweet disposition. If you are interested in this sweet girl, please download an adoption application from our website at www.bhsva.org and submit it to our office.

Charlie is a handsome 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix who we pulled from the pound after his family had to move. Charlie is always among the best behaved at our adoption events, so laid back and easy-going. He is a calm boy who would do best in a fenced yard or kept on leash when outside. If you are interested in this sweet boy, please download an adoption application from our website at www.bhsva.org and submit it to our office.

Where Would He Go?

Duke was a loyal pet to his person since he was a puppy. As his person grew older and more frail, Duke served as her motivator to keep going, her constant companion as she struggled to maintain her independence. Now, at nearly 8 years old, Duke has lost his person to a nursing home. His person made her family promise to find Duke a home, that he wouldn't end up frightened and alone at the pound.

So, Duke lived alone in his home, being cared for daily by his person's family, a family that was unable to take him in despite their obvious love for him and his love for them. Worse yet, the house was for sale and Duke would not be able to stay there indefinitely. If someone bought the house, where would he go???

When Duke's family reached out to one of our volunteers, we weren't sure we would be able to help. We have so few foster homes and they rarely have space to take in another animal. This is the sad situation for all area rescues.

But the BHS family of fosters and volunteers pulled together to save this sweet boy. Fosters visited Duke to take pictures and find out more about him. Volunteers and fosters shared his story all over Facebook and reached out to other rescues that specialize in senior dogs. After just a few days, we had hope. One of our dedicated fosters was willing and able to make space for him in her home. Duke is now safely and happily in foster care, no longer at risk of ending up at the pound.

His new foster mom, Julie, reports that he is doing well, ignoring the cats and walking well on leash. He is housebroken, despite his recent stress. He is obviously starved for attention, shadowing his foster mom and asking for belly rubs. He will clearly make some lucky person a wonderful forever companion.

Duke is already neutered and has some vaccination history, but we will get him updated, heartworm tested, and microchipped before he is ready for adoption. We hope to have him posted on our adoption websites soon. If you would like to meet this boy, email an adoption application to info@bhsva.org.

We are so thankful to the extraordinary people that make up our family of fosters and volunteers. There is no end to their generosity of spirit and our community is a better place because of them.

BHS Adoptables of the Week: Kensie & Sparkles

Kensie is approximately 5 months old, all white lab mix with one brown ear and beautiful blue eyes that will melt your heart. She is still a puppy so of course has lots of energy and loves to chew. Kensie is a happy and fun girl who loves to play with her toys! She does like to jump up and tell you how much she has missed you & give you kisses. She listens intently to you for instruction and responds promptly so feel she would learn rules fairly quickly. Just a sweet girl who would be so happy with a fenced yard to give her some room to run and play! Kensie is very unique and makes the most expressive faces. You can't help but smile and laugh when you're around her!! If you are interested in meeting Kensie, submit your completed adoption application (available on our website) to info@bhsva.org.

Sparkles is as dramatic & colorful as her name suggests. Her photos are very pretty, but she is just gorgeous. This super friendly spayed female calico just showed up on the doorstep of one of our foster homes on Christmas Eve like one of the best Christmas gifts ever. Typical Sparkles, she just strolled in & settled in on the couch. A happy little cat, she is very people-oriented. She would do fine with children & dogs & probably other cats. For more information, please contact Leslie at LMHANDVTM@msn.com.

BHS Adoptables of the Week: Maizey & Mufasa

You can just read her thoughts, "C'mon, see the toy? Can't you see the toy? C'mon, throw it & I'll show you my happy dance! C'mon, throw it!!" This is Maizey, a very smart 2 year old German Shepherd mix---so smart & athletic she was chosen to train for Contraband Detection School by the prison system. She did very well with her training, but got distracted & bored. To her, life is for playing, not working. She is crate trained, but also happy outdoors most of the time. She hasn't had much time living indoors to be sure she is housebroken, but she is a very quick learner. Email info@bhsva.org if you’re interested in meeting Maizey!

Sweet Mufasa is an outgoing light orange tabby with a lovely white bib. He is personality plus & loves to play with toys & play hide & seek under blankets. This love-muffin will run to greet you, talking the whole time & rolling over for a belly rub. Mufasa is approximately 2 years old, front declawed, neutered. He gets along with other cats & dogs. He would likely be very child friendly. Email info@bhsva.org if you are interested in meeting Mufasa!

BHS Desperate Housecats Episode 2

Episode 2: "Impressive"  In this week's episode, the residents learn about another new kid that just moved in. Speculations flie about how he received his injuries and Smokey tries to play Mr. Fix It...

We are continually getting cats and kittens dumped overnight at our Headquarters and we have no space left to keep them. Most that are dumped with us are already sick and leaving them with us puts the health and well-being of our current residents in danger. We do NOT have the resources to continue taking on additional cats/kittens at this time.

If you need help, contact us and we will do what we can to help...the right way. If you do not want kittens, PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER your cats. We offer low-cost spaying and neutering for ALL Bedford County/City residents. Call (540-586-6100) or email (info@bhsva.org) our office for details.

If you are interested in adopting any of our Desperate Housecats, email info@bhsva.org for an adoption application. If you are interested in fostering a Desperate Housecat, email sunshine@bhsva.org for a foster application.

BHS Adoptables of the Week: Tater & Kensie

She came to us from the pound as Tater, but she's such a small lab, we affectionately call her Tater-Tot.  Tater-Tot is the most warm-hearted, gentle, SO quiet, natural born "hunter".  She has a very sensitive tracking nose.  Barks a single bark only when she senses certain wildlife nearby, such as deer or rabbit. She doesn't bark at people, dogs, squirrels or birds.  She does great on leash walks, nose to the ground so I think she views the walks as "hunts" and loves being able to play outdoors.  She's plays great with dogs, very gentle and quiet at play. She's smart; she knows the usual simple commands and is eager to learn more.  Tater-Tot is housebroken and when it's time for the humans to go to bed, she's ready to sleep through the night as well.  If you are interested in meeting Tater-Tot, please email info@bhsva.org for an application.

Taffy is a healthy, spry little 12 year old female Min Pin/Chihuahua mix who came to us when her family could no longer care for her. She is pure sweetness and simply wants to be with her person. She gets along well with other animals, is housebroken, and loves to go for car rides and cuddle in her person’s lap. Still fairly active for her age, she also loves to go for walks and play tug of war. Taffy is hoping for a loving home where she can live out her senior years in the comfort she deserves. If you are interested in meeting Taffy, email info@bhsva.org for an application.
